The custom cushion your crew made is wonderful. And I do appreciate the advice and direction that you provided in regards to the choice of foam. You were spot on in your advice.
The couch cushion fits perfectly and its exactly what I wanted. My back feels better already just from sitting on it and kicking back on it! Bravo to you and your crew. Thank you very much. Sincerely, J.D.H.
Our premium quality polyurethane foam is available in a range of depths and densities; the higher the number the stiffer the foam. For example, 20 is extra-soft, 70 is extra firm. The most popular upholstery foams are 33 and 45. Forty-five provides sturdy support without sacrificing comfort. Thirty-three is considerably softer. Most sofas and chairs are manufactured using 33 or a combination of 45 and 33. Some prefer the cushier feel of 33 for seat backs. Forty-five is used for seat bottoms where a little more support is preferable.

Boat owners and commercial fishermen often choose an even stiffer foam, such as 55, for galley seating and settees. The softer 33 is popular for marine mattresses. One rule of thumb when selecting foam: the softer the foam, the thicker it needs to be. For example, two inches of an extra stiff foam might be adequate, but you'll simply "bottom out" when sitting on two inches of an extra soft foam.
Don't settle for junk foam sold in big box stores. Drop by our showroom and discover how premium quality foam will enhance the look and feel of your furniture.
*Please note HR70 is available, but it's "stiff as a board" and rarely used in upholstery projects.
Most high quality polyurethane foams are processed using temperatures up to 250° C. This sort of foam is then cured and cut to size.
During this hot mold production process a manufacturer will adjust the properties of the polyurethane to achieve a desired strength, comfort level and durability. Because the most common grades of this foam are available in different densities, it's a perfect foam for furniture. We use this for most couch & chair cushions. These foams stay bouncy and last a long time.
Cold cure foam tends to be much denser. Because manufacturing temperatures rarely rise above 60° C, cold cure foam is ideal for injection-molded products such as car seats. This closed cell foam is more rigid and water resistant. It's also a lot more expensive than foam manufactured the other way. We do not sell closed cell foam.
To get the most accurate price estimate when ordering foam, be sure take three measurements before you call.

1) Measure edge thickness. Most sofa cushions are between four and six inches thick. If the foam is wrapped in Dacron® or some other material, it may appear slightly thicker. 2) Measure depth from front to back. 3) Measure the width at the widest point. Most sofa cushions are rectangular, but some have "tails" or "ears" that cover the face of the armrest. Be sure to include this when measuring the width.
Pro Tip Never purchase polyurethane foam directly from a website. Most foam sold online is junk. It's important to touch and squeeze your foam before buying. That way you know what you're getting and get what you want. We only sell premium quality foam. Drop by our friendly foam showroom at 945 N 96th (off Aurora Avenue) and see for yourself.
Unlike traditional cushion foam that traps water and quickly becomes heavy, musty, or prone to mildew, EZ-Dri Foam and DryFast Foam feature an open-cell structure engineered to allow water to flow through freely. This rapid drainage system means your cushions will dry quickly after rain or spray, letting you get back to enjoying your boat or patio without waiting for days or dealing with mildew concerns.

On boats, cockpit and flybridge cushions are constantly exposed to spray, rain, and humidity. Using conventional foam often results in cushions that stay damp, leading to discomfort, odor, and a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. EZ-Dri Foam and DryFast Foam resist these issues by allowing water to pass right through while also providing excellent air circulation, ensuring your cushions dry rapidly and remain fresh even in humid environments.
For patios and outdoor furniture, sudden showers or morning dew can be a headache when traditional foam is used. With EZ-Dri and DryFast Foam, your cushions will shed water quickly, minimizing downtime and eliminating the hassle of dragging cushions indoors or constantly flipping them to dry.
Not only are these foams practical, but they are also engineered for comfort. EZ-Dri and DryFast Foam are soft yet supportive, providing a comfortable seating experience that does not sacrifice resilience. They hold their shape well over time, even under frequent use, ensuring your investment in high-quality outdoor cushions pays off in long-lasting comfort and appearance.
The unique structure of EZ-Dri and DryFast Foam discourages the growth of mold and mildew, two of the most significant threats to outdoor and marine upholstery. Combined with the use of breathable outdoor fabrics, these foams create a cushion system that stays hygienic and low-maintenance.
Whether you’re restoring your boat seating, refreshing your patio furniture, or building custom outdoor seating solutions, EZ-Dri Foam and DryFast Foam are the smart choices for year-round outdoor comfort. Enjoy dry, comfortable, and fresh-smelling cushions that can handle whatever nature throws at them.
Pro Tip When ordering foam it's best to include an additional half inch on all sides. For example, if your cushion is 25" x 28" you should order a 26" x 29" foam insert. The foam insert needs to be slightly larger than the cover to properly "fill the space" and maintain its shape over time.
Upgrade the look and feel of your sectional, sofa, settee or chair with perfect fit, commercial grade foam. Here's an example of the difference quality makes.
Some like the feel of down cushions, but over time the feathers compress and the cushions lose shape. Down is not only difficult to maintain, it can be a problem for folks with allergies. These cushions were originally stuffed with down (above).
We replaced the down with commercial grade polyurethane cushion foam, then wrapped the foam with Dacron® to enhance the look and feel. As you can see, the difference is striking. Because we only use commercial grade furniture foams, these cushions will look and feel great for years. What's more, a polyurethane cushion can be soft or firm. Our polyfoam comes in a wide range of densities. Drop by our North Seattle showroom to find the foam that's right for you.
Pro Tip Polyurethane foam is petroleum based. Quality foam is not cheap. Inexpensive foam is often available in big box stores at "discount prices". We don't sell this inexpesive foam because it doesn't last. It will lose it's "bounce" and deteriorate much sooner than you may think.
Premium quality foam revitalizes your furniture, but if the fabric is old or damaged, new foam may not be enough. Complete your project with brand new custom cushion covers! After choosing your foam, all you have to do is select a fabric, and we'll do the rest.

All of the fabrics in our showroom are rated in "double rubs", the industry standard for abrasion resistance. For home use, the rule of thumb is a fabric rated 30,000 double rubs or more. If it's a window seat cushion, you can get by with a lighter fabric. If it's used everyday, such as a sofa or dining cushion, you might look for something stronger.
Commercial applications require a much more durable fabric. We recommend something rated 100,000 double rubs or more.
Seattle Foam is your neighborhood friendly foam store. Stop by our showroom and we'll show you how to select the fabric that's right for you. Another thing to keep in mind, natural fabrics such as wool and cotton, will tend to stain. Man-made fabrics are easier to clean and often stronger.
In most cases we'll wrap your cushions in a layer of fluffy Dacron batting before slipping on the covers. Dacron adds a little bit to the cost, but it's well worth the investment. It "plumps" your cushion and rounds out the edges. Without an inch or so of batting, your new custom cushions will show wrinkles or look flat as a board.
